Justice Initiative Programs
Case Planning
- Comprehensive gender responsive intake and assessment
- Individual case plan development
- Referral to community-based services and after care resources and services
- Provides detention-based and after placement case planning for 200 girls
annually between the ages of 11 and 18, who are detained at Youth Guidance
Center.
While
in detention, girls are identified and referred to Girls Justice
Initiative case managers to begin receiving services. Case planners
provide intake, assessment and collaborate with probation officers to
identify and recommend resources for clients and their families.
Client's needs, strengths and progress are tracked in a confidential
database.

After Care Supplies
Exit packages including resources and contact information, toiletries, hygiene supplies, and clothing.
Provides girls detained at Youth Guidance Center with resources and
necessities to return home, return to county of origin or out of home
placement.

Ongoing Case Management

Provide case management services for 50 girls annually between
the ages of 14 and 24, who are returning to San Francisco
from out of home placement or the California Youth Authority.
Mentoring
- Recruitment, screening, training, and supervision of mentors
- Assessment and supervision of mentees in detention
Provide
mentoring services for 120 male and female youth annually between the
ages of 11 and 18, detained at Youth Guidance Center with 40 mentors
from local San Francisco colleges. Mentors visit with clients two times
per week offering support, guidance, education and assistance to youth
in detention. Youth are selected based on need, including lack of
family support, severity of case and other special circumstances.

Inside Mentoring Program Application
Educational Mentoring
Provides
educational assessment, planning and mentoring for girls exiting the
juvenile justice system in need of individual support to return to
school, improve skills, set goals and access resources. Mentors work
with girls to develop and implement an individual plan that will
improve their academic and vocational outcomes and prevent them from
remaining involved in the juvenile justice system.

Training
Provide
comprehensive trainings for community-based organizations who work with
youth involved in the juvenile justice system. More than 60 agencies
and 415 staff attended trainings last year.Trainings are provided 10
times per year.

Individual and Family Therapy
The
Girls Justice Initiative provides free individual and family cognitive
behavioral therapy to girls involved in the juvenile justice system.
Referrals are accepted from probation officers, case managers, and
community agencies or self referrals.

Cognitive Behavioral Groups
Cognitive Behavioral groups are offered to young women ages 14-17 who
are currently on probation or at risk for probation. Groups are offered
three times per year.
Groups follow an evidence- based curriculum and promote self awareness,
healing and goal setting in a safe and therapeutic environment.

Street Law
Street Law's customized program teaches practical law, public policy
analysis and life skills to girls involved at various stages of the justice
system. The mission is to provide practical, participatory education about
law, democracy and human rights that empowers girls to transform democratic
ideals into citizen action. Groups are provided two times per week to girls
in custody as part of social studies school curriculum.
